Italy Welcomes Digital Nomads with new Visa

Italy is now extending its warm embrace to the digital nomad community. The Italian government has officially rolled out the red carpet with the introduction of the digital nomad visa, a beacon of opportunity for those who marry their wanderlust with their professional lives.

A New Chapter in Italian Hospitality

Gone are the days when Italy was just a dream destination for travelers and history aficionados. With the shift towards remote work, Italy is rapidly becoming a sought-after haven for digital nomads. This transition is made possible by Italy’s digital nomad visa, which officially came into effect on April 4, following its signing into law on March 28, 2022.

Key Features of Italy’s Digital Nomad Visa

Eligibility: Applicants must start the process from abroad, applying through an Italian consulate in their country of legal residence or citizenship.

Income Threshold: A proof of a minimum gross annual income of €27,000 (to be confirmed) is essential to qualify.

Remote Work Documentation: Applicants need to provide evidence of remote work arrangements, including contracts or freelance work, for a minimum of six months prior.

Healthcare Coverage: It’s mandatory to have a one-year health insurance coverage.

Accommodation Proof: Proof of housing is required.

Family Friendly: The visa allows for the inclusion of family members in the relocation process.

Criminal Record Check: Applicants may need to provide a criminal record certificate or a self-declaration of their criminal record status.

Moreover, there’s no specific educational requirement, setting it apart from the Italian blue card and lowering barriers for a diverse range of professionals.

Tax Implications and Residence Permits

While the visa doesn’t come with specific tax rules for digital nomads for now, the standard Italian tax regime likely applies. Nomads might opt for opening a sole proprietorship under the “forfetario regime,” enjoying a 5% income tax rate plus social contributions-that might be high, though. Taxes might be complex to handle, so we suggest you to talk to tax advisors to do everything by the book.

The visa initially grants a one-year residence permit, renewable under the same conditions.
