Digital Nomads Visa for Italy

digital nomads italy visa

Update! A new visa for digital nomads in Italy was announced in April 2024 (read more).

Is there a digital nomads visa for Italy? The short answer, is “not yet.” While the correct answer is “it’s, still, work in progress.”

In March 28, 2022, Italy approved a new law (here, in Italian– Art. 6 – quinquies) introducing the concept of digital nomads (“nomadi digitali”) in its regulation and mentioning for the first time the “digital nomads visa” to move to Italy. While it was officially approved, the new law requires lawmakers to take additional steps to launch the visa for digital nomads–more info below. These steps where supposed to take place within 30 days, but nothing happened so far… So the digital nomads visa for Italy hasn’t been introduced, yet.

What we know from the law so far is quite limited, but there are already some approved guidelines:

  1. Visa will be up to 1 year
  2. Coming from extra-EU
  3. With a health insurance
  4. Work remotely for non-Italian companies
  5. Leveraging digital skills and technology for work

The law also require the lawmakers to decide on the following topics when the visa will be discussed and introduced:

  1. Minimum income
  2. Job categories included as digital nomads (“nomadi digitali”)
  3. Process to apply for the visa

Are there alternatives?

Yes.

If you are a EU citizen, regulations are already favorable for you to work as a digital nomad from Italy, but following some restrictions–including length of stay and how many days you work from Italy. To be compliant with fiscal and legal regulations, we advise you to consult a professional advisor to avoid irregularities.

If you are a non-EU citizen, there are other solutions–for example the self-employed visa. Moreover, many digital nomads leverage their touristic temporary visa especially when they don’t plan to stay in the country for long. We can’t advise to do the same, but we understand that while the visa is not available yet there is a missing regulation that should be introduced asap to allow digital nomads to work from Italy with a valid visa.
